Stevens backs Republican Rogers in Michigan Senate race, drawing Democratic anger
The Democratic congresswoman switched her support from Abdul El-Sayed before Tuesday’s election.
Democratic U.S. Representative Haley Stevens endorsed Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s Senate race on Sunday, November 1, reversing her earlier support for Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed. Roll Call and CBS Detroit reported the move on Monday, ahead of the November 3 election.
Stevens, who lost the Democratic Senate primary to El-Sayed, appeared alongside Rogers at a Detroit church. She had been expected to campaign with El-Sayed. Her decision drew criticism from Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer; CBS Detroit also reported resignations among her staff.
The endorsement adds a late dispute to the contest as voters prepare to decide control of Congress. Its effect on the result remains uncertain. The accompanying photograph is Stevens’ official 2018 portrait, rather than an image of Sunday’s appearance.
