Austrian aid worker in Anjar warns of a hard winter for Lebanon's families

Rising prices, unaffordable heating oil and blocked olive groves weigh on the displaced and the poor.

Lebanese families face a hard winter, Austrian aid worker Waltraud Torossian-Brigasky told the Catholic news agency Kathpress from Anjar, the mostly Armenian town in the Bekaa that has sheltered displaced people for months.

She said prices for fuel, electricity, food and medicine keep rising, heating oil is out of reach for many, some school heating tanks are only a third full and many parents cannot pay school fees. She also pointed to the south, which produces about 38% of Lebanon's olives and where, she said, Israeli soldiers are partly blocking residents' access to their land.

Her small NGO, MTCS, supports the new "Healing Harbor" centre in Anjar, which offers psychological help to locals, Syrian refugees and internally displaced people. Demand for professional care is high, she said.

Her testimony is a call to the diaspora: this winter, practical solidarity with families at home matters.
