New York reports its first measles-associated death in more than 30 years
Officials say a child in Lewis County died during the ongoing outbreak.
New York health officials announced on November 2 that a child in Lewis County had died in association with the ongoing measles outbreak, the state’s first known measles-associated death in more than 30 years. Reuters and WRVO reported the announcement independently.
WRVO said officials had not disclosed the child’s precise age or vaccination status. Those details should not be inferred from broader county statistics. State authorities offered resources for community outreach and vaccination support. Governor Kathy Hochul’s emergency declaration came in October, before this announcement. The accompanying archival CDC micrograph shows the measles virus; it is not a sample from this child.
