Hezbollah unveils its own housing aid, challenging the state's role
The group offers up to $14,000 per household while the government leads official reconstruction.
Hezbollah has announced a "Promise and Commitment" housing programme offering up to $14,000 to households whose homes were destroyed, according to Reuters and L'Orient Today.
Beirut and its southern suburbs would receive up to $14,000 ($8,000 for furniture, $6,000 for rent); elsewhere the cap is $12,000, paid in four quarterly instalments. Only primary residences qualify.
Hezbollah's Hassan Daamoush accused the government of neglecting the displaced, while Asharq Al-Awsat reported that residents in the south called the sums too small to cover six months' rent.
Reuters reported that the group received $200 million from Iran, a claim the group has not detailed. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has meanwhile met lawmakers on government-run reconstruction. Lebanese Lobby holds that reconstruction aid belongs in state hands, under public oversight.
