Beirut asks Tehran for a new ambassador, but Iran's envoy stays

Lebanon wants a 'state-to-state' relationship with Iran; Mitri says there is no progress on exclusive state arms.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam asked Iran on 24 September to nominate a new ambassador to Beirut and called for a new "state-to-state" chapter in relations, according to Anadolu Agency. He made the request to President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The request follows Lebanon's decision in March to declare Iran's envoy, Mohammad Reza Sheibani, persona non grata. Anadolu reports that he did not leave.

On 18 October, Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri again said Lebanon has asked Iran to name a new ambassador and that there is no progress yet on the file of limiting weapons to the state, according to Al-Markazia.

Lebanese Lobby believes diplomatic relations with any country must rest on respect for Lebanese sovereignty and on the state's exclusive right to bear arms.
