Central bank studying higher withdrawal limits, sources say; reserve belongs to depositors

Banque du Liban sources told LBC no decision has been taken on raising monthly caps.

Sources at Banque du Liban told LBC on 18 October that raising the ceiling on monthly deposit withdrawals is under study, according to reports by Elnashra, MTV and VDL News.

The sources also stressed that the central bank's foreign-currency reserve is depositors' money, signalling that any increase would be weighed against protecting it.

No amount, date or decision was announced. Depositors have lived under withdrawal caps since the 2019 banking collapse, and any change would need to be confirmed in an official central bank circular.
